We have a couple hundred test cases. They’re managed in a well formatted Google Sheet and it’s time to upgrade to a test case management and execution system. Any thoughts on a lightweight and simple tool to use?
Things to think about:
- JIRA integration isn’t so important at the moment as we’re not using JIRA but it could be important should we decide to move to JIRA (wouldn’t be for another 6 months atleast)
- Executing test cases from a mobile device is a nice to have
- A configurable dashboard that shows the current health of testing activities across various apps and builds is ideal
Any thoughts on Zephyr or TestRail ? I’d love to hear your experiences with these tools
We use Zephyr with JIRA right now and its not too bad, UI is a bit cumbersome until you figure it out.
Just last week we were given a presentation on a JIRA plug-in called 'X-Ray'.
It is similar to Zephyr but has some better reporting and can even kick off automation runs from with-in.
Might be work having a look at as well. Haven't used TestRail before so I cant add anything of value there.

Thanks for the info Trent! I checked out TestRail and am trying it out. While it is a bit pricey per user per month ($25 per user per month), it is getting the job done for manual testing. I'll keep your comment in mind moving forward!
Curious to know which tool you decided on – TestRail or Zephyr? I'm going through the same dilema at my company and I'm looking to make a decision which one to use.
Hi Beatriz,
We went with TestRail and I'm happy with it. It does the job. I don't really use the reporting feature but it works great in managing manual test cases and test runs. We're able to re-use existing tests on multiple platforms by creating a customer tag / category for the client type (eg web, iphone, android). Works fine for our needs
